The Urban Institute

$50,000 / 2002 / Health and Human Services
For a study, “Returning Home: Understanding the Challenges of Prisoner Reentry” delineating the risks and needs of returning prisoners and their families in Baltimore. Data will be collected from interviews with offenders before and after release, and from interviews with family members, neighborhood focus groups and representatives from human service and employment agencies.

The YANA Project

$60,610 / 2002 / Health and Human Services
Toward staffing costs of a social worker/court monitor to work with women and girls engaged in prostitution. The YANA model offers a continuum of services from street outreach to drop-in services, counseling, and case management with referrals to medical services. Participants who complete the 90-day program with no new arrests will have charges dropped.

Towson University

$100,000 / 2007 / Health and Human Services
For the implementation of an oral health intervention program serving up to 100 homeless persons at the Helping Up Mission. The program will provide follow-up oral health care to clients with oral-health needs identified through on-site screenings or referred by Helping Up Mission’s case managers.

Towson University

$50,000 / 2008 / Health and Human Services
For the continued support of an oral health intervention program serving up to 200 homeless persons at the Helping Up Mission. The program offers oral health education, screenings, dental care, and restorative health care with work done mostly by volunteer dentists, dental students, and nursing students.

Towson University Foundation

$50,000 / 2011 / Health and Human Services
For continued support of the Oral Health Intervention Program serving up to 200 homeless persons at the Helping Up Mission. Students and faculty from the University of Maryland Dental School conduct on-site oral health screenings with follow-up care provided at the dental school. Towson University nursing students provide oral health education and case management assistance to ensure that clients get to their follow-up appointments. The work is undertaken by volunteer dentists, dental students, and nursing students.
