The Mission continues provides veterans with an outlet for continued service in 55 metropolitan areas. Veteran volunteers work with nonprofit partners and community leaders through its week long Mass Deployment initiative. Baltimore is this year’s Mass Deployment site, with planned projects in the Harlem Park and Brooklyn/Curtis Bay communities. This grant provides support for expenses and equipment associated with this year’s project.
Baltimore Brew provides in-depth reporting on public policy, government accountability and behind the scenes political coverage. Founded in 2009, the online publication has 60-70,000 unique readers each month. The Brew holds a critical space in independent local media. This grant provided funds in support of staffing and related expenses.
Banner Neighborhoods provides low-income senior and disabled homeowners in zip code 21224 with home repairs, handicap modifications and tasks that involve climbing ladders or require heavy lifting. Relieving homeowners of the cost and difficulty of completing home repairs and maintenance enables them to age in place and retain their community ties and social networks. The exterior house improvements, and in some cases tree and vine removal in yards, are critical to keeping senior’s home compliant with code, avoiding environmental citations and municipal fines that unpaid can lead to tax sale and loss of a home.
Healthy Neighborhoods, Inc. (HNI) is a citywide initiative that promotes investment in “middle Neighborhoods” through resident engagement, a focus on promoting neighborhood assets, and investment in housing stock. HNI serves 41 neighborhoods across the City. This grant provided support for core program activities and expansion to other neighborhoods.
JUFJ will continue to work with the Public Justice Center to monitor the new licensing and inspection requirements for all rental units in Baltimore City to ensure effective implementation, pursue changes to Rent Court processes that provide greater tenant defenses, and advocate for legislative changes to better protect tenants.
