Parity is an equitable development nonprofit organization launching in Harlem Park, one of Baltimore’s many culturally and historically rich African American neighborhoods. Parity intends to acquire vacant houses and renovate them for sale to new homeowners. Parity has cultivated a cohort of pre-committed and pre-qualified homebuyers. Grant funds will be used for four homebuyer purchase incentives of $10,000 each to support redevelopment and reduce the cost of each house purchase.

Toward start-up costs of two revenue-producing ventures: Chesapeake Trees, an urban tree nursery; and Baltimore City Wood Works, LLC, a waste wood reuse/recycle business. The purpose is threefold: to grow and sell local urban-appropriate tree species that can be used to increase the tree canopy; create opportunities for city residents to learn about environmental restoration/mitigation projects; and generate examples of successful environmental social ventures.

Capital funding for the restoration of the historic Superintendent’s House, located at the heart of a nine-acre park improvement project in Druid Hill Park. The restored site will become part of the new headquarters of the Parks and People Foundation, which administers 14 programs providing greening activities and recreational opportunities. The building will be used for community training, special events, and meetings.

Second-year funding for support of two revenue-producing initiatives of the Social Enterprises Program: Chesapeake Trees, an urban tree nursery; and Baltimore Wood Works, LLC, a waste- wood recycling/reuse business. Once a permanent site for the nursery is secured and the tree brokering operation is fully operational, Parks & People anticipates sales of 5,000 trees a year.

Parks & People Foundation offers a paid youth internship and enrichment after school program and a summer Youthworks program called ‘Branches’ to address two critical issues: the need for meaningful employment for economically disadvantaged youth and the need for a trained workforce caring for parks and green spaces in the City. Participants in the Branches program gain hands-on experience and skills designing and implementing projects that have a community impact while contributing to the areas where many of them live and attend school, including neighborhoods which have high levels of poverty and few opportunities for positive development of young people.
