Grants

The Abell Foundation awards grants to nonprofit community partners working to improve the quality of life in Baltimore. We provide seed funding for innovative pilots, support for ongoing community programs and services, and funding for capital projects. In addition to providing grant funding, the Foundation supports our nonprofit partners through connection to our local and national networks, as well as our team’s deep experience in and knowledge of Baltimore as it relates to our program areas.

Eligibility and Review Criteria

For all nonprofit organizations seeking grant funding, regardless of the request amount. 

Small Grants Process

For grant requests of $10,000 or less.

Reviewed on a rolling basis. There is no deadline to apply.

Regular Grants Process

For grant requests greater than $10,000.

Reviewed at one of the Foundation’s five annual Board meetings.

Scenic America

$10,000 / 2000 / Environment
Seed funding to establish a statewide scenic conservation organization, Scenic Maryland, as an affiliate of Scenic America. The purposes of the program are to continue the education of local citizens about scenic conservation, serve as a local watchdog on billboard measures, and work in partnerships and collaboratives to protect Maryland’s scenic beauty.

Second Chance Project, Inc.

$75,000 / 2000 / Health and Human Services
For support of the Recidivist Intervention Project Initiative for female and male ex-offenders. The program provides assistance with a job search, job training, GED classes, referrals to transitional housing, and mentoring.

Shepherd’s Clinic

$35,000 / 2000 / Health and Human Services
Continued funding to provide primary medical and dental care to uninsured persons in Baltimore City.

South East Community Organization

$96,410 / 2000 / Community Development
Toward salaries for caseworkers, loan processors, and rehabilitation specialists for a senior home modification program. The purpose of the effort is to integrate home health intervention, home modification, and ongoing support to promote independent living for low- to moderate-income seniors in their homes.

Southern Maryland Food Bank

$25,300 / 2000 / Health and Human Services
For the purchase of a refrigerated truck to transport perishable surplus and reusable food items from the Maryland Food Bank in Baltimore to the hungry in Southern Maryland.
