Grants

The Abell Foundation awards grants to nonprofit community partners working to improve the quality of life in Baltimore. We provide seed funding for innovative pilots, support for ongoing community programs and services, and funding for capital projects. In addition to providing grant funding, the Foundation supports our nonprofit partners through connection to our local and national networks, as well as our team’s deep experience in and knowledge of Baltimore as it relates to our program areas.

Eligibility and Review Criteria

For all nonprofit organizations seeking grant funding, regardless of the request amount. 

Small Grants Process

For grant requests of $10,000 or less.

Reviewed on a rolling basis. There is no deadline to apply.

Regular Grants Process

For grant requests greater than $10,000.

Reviewed at one of the Foundation’s five annual Board meetings.

Historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition, Inc./Rose Street Community Center

$205,000 / 2000 / Health and Human Services
Four grants in support of drug treatment and job training programs at the Rose Street Community Center. The center supports job training, educational opportunities, and drug treatment programs for community residents interested in rehabilitation. The center also provides weekly stipends to program participants to assist them with living expenses while enrolled in the self-help programs.

Health Care for the Homeless, Inc.

$5,000 / 2000 / Health and Human Services
To provide emergency shelter for homeless clients unable to be served by Baltimore City.

Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc.

$10,000 / 2000 / Health and Human Services
Planning grant for the creation of the Learn and Earn computer recycling and literacy program, designed for use by low-income residents of Baltimore City. The funds allow for the refurbishing of computers, and the use> of computers to network computer literacy training. Goodwill is adapting the Learn and Earn model as a continuing program for workforce development.

Genesis Jobs

$60,550 / 2000 / Health and Human Services
Two grants for continued funding of the Job Opportunities Task Force. The purpose of the task force is to provide leadership in the Baltimore region for developing and advocating policies and programs, forging partnerships, and leveraging investments that increase the marketable skills, income, and economic opportunities of low-skill, low-income job seekers.

Frederick Community Action Agency

$40,000 / 2000 / Health and Human Services
Capital funding for renovation of a building for use as an expanded primary health care clinic serving low-income and homeless persons in Frederick County.
