Grants

The Abell Foundation awards grants to nonprofit community partners working to improve the quality of life in Baltimore. We provide seed funding for innovative pilots, support for ongoing community programs and services, and funding for capital projects. In addition to providing grant funding, the Foundation supports our nonprofit partners through connection to our local and national networks, as well as our team’s deep experience in and knowledge of Baltimore as it relates to our program areas.

Eligibility and Review Criteria

For all nonprofit organizations seeking grant funding, regardless of the request amount. 

Small Grants Process

For grant requests of $10,000 or less.

Reviewed on a rolling basis. There is no deadline to apply.

Regular Grants Process

For grant requests greater than $10,000.

Reviewed at one of the Foundation’s five annual Board meetings.

In support of covering costs for eight remaining male students experiencing homelessness in the Father Joubert boarding program at St. Frances Academy.

Scenic Maryland, Inc.

$5,000 / 2003 / Environment
Continued support for statewide scenic conservation efforts. The objectives of the program are to educate citizens about scenic conservation, serve as a local watchdog on billboard measures, and work in partnership with other conservation organizations to protect Maryland’s scenic beauty.

Second Chance, Inc.

$23,000 / 2003 / Health and Human Services
To provide trainee stipends for a job training program in construction industry trades for unemployed Baltimore residents.

Sharp-Leadenhall Planning Committee

$24,216 / 2003 / Health and Human Services
For the purchase and installation of video cameras inside and outside the Sharp-Leadenhall development, designed to control crime.

St Martin Church of Christ, Inc.

$5,000 / 2003 / Health and Human Services
For a feasibility study of outreach programs serving the disadvantaged in Madison Park and the surrounding communities.
