Hospital-Acquired Infections: A National Tragedy

January 2007 / Abell Reports / Health and Human Services

Across America, 90,000 people a year die from hospital-acquired infections, while hospitals, government and communities struggle for answers.

Across the nation, hospital-acquired infections are a serious problem that demands increased attention. People who enter the hospital may end up with an infection that can extend their stay, cause lasting physical problems and be fatal.

How serious is the problem? A definitive answer cannot be known because there is no rigorous, nationwide tracking of hospital-acquired infections, but what is known is disturbing.
